Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. This session will highlight Let’s Move!, the First Lady’s initiative dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, as well as several other initiatives across federal agencies.

Greetings!
The S.D. Dental Home Initiative Project is pleased to sponsor the Head Start Oral Health Summit to be held on March 1st and 2nd , 2012 at Cedar Shores Conference Center in Oacoma.
The summit will begin at 1 pm on Thursday, March 1st and the agenda will focus on networking, Oral Health data, policies and resources for Head Start programs. These activities will be directed toward Oral Health Staff and Directors.
The entire second day, Friday, March 2nd will be a professional development opportunity on Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing is a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a person’s own motivations and commitment to change. It has been used effectively in Head Starts and other agencies and has been found to be an effective method of eliciting from clients their own good motivations for making behavior changes in the interest of their health and the health of their children. It has been used successfully in gaining compliance and as a process that is effective in activating an individual’s own motivation for change. Our trainer will be Joseph Currier, a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, www.motivationalinterviewing.org This day long training (approximately 9am-3pm Central time) will be excellent for Family Services Staff, Home Visitors and anyone working with families as well as Oral Health Staff.
A block of rooms has been reserved at Cedar Shores Hotel for the night of March 1st . Please call 605-734-6376 and refer to “Oral Health Summit” when making your reservation to receive the group rate of $79.95. Reimbursement will be available for participants for this 1 night lodging.
